the 16 West Main Street ProjecT
the story we are sticking to...CLI is a non-profit corporation that partners with the Huron County Board of Developmental Disabilities (HCBDD) to increase the earnings and status of people with disabilities. It's confusing because both CLI and HCBDD are known as “Christie Lane.” 16 West Main Street was bought by the non-profit CLI. CLI gets its money from its business operations, such as shredding, recycling, assembly, etc. This project was financed for CLI by CIVISTA bank. No public funds were spent to buy 16 West Main Street.

First Floor |
CLI is going to turn the first floor space into a community art space that we can use for some of our art and ceramics projects—as well as provide space for after-school art programs, parties and other things that add value to the Norwalk community.
|
Second Floor |
Our plans for the 2nd and 3rd floors are a bit further off, but we have ambitions of partnering with local entrepreneurs to provide business incubator space on a barter basis in return for something that they can offer that will benefit either CLI or a person with DD. That’s further off though. Our immediate goal is to rehab the first floor and start making stuff and start participating in life on Main Street.
|
Building Updates |
Our plan is to leave the front 2/3 of the first floor open—wood floors, lots of glass, 15 foot tall ceilings, a large sliding door to the back rooms, exposed spiral ductwork, etc. That front space will be the public, community art space. The back 1/3 of the building will be private spaces, restrooms, lunchroom, etc. The big awning will be taken down, the glass in the front taken all the way up-- perhaps with a smaller, more traditional awning placed higher up. We will also be putting new windows front and back on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

CLI bought this space instead of something newer in a plaza because this project is way cooler. We like point out to anyone that will listen to us that CLI is awesome because the community that supports CLI is awesome. When CLI did its SWOT analysis and business plan leading to this purchase, the strengths and opportunities related to investing in an asset on Main Street really jumped out. We can’t imagine that anyone wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to move to the Main Street business neighborhood.
It’s hard to be patient. We are super motivated to get this project off the ground. However there are steps that must be done before renovations can begin. We are currently drafting renovation plans so that we can apply for the necessary permits. As soon as this step is completed, we will solicit quotes for the work. Our original target was to be up and running on the first floor by Thanksgiving.
If anyone has questions or is interested in touring the space, they should contact Christie Lane Industries’ Director John Schwartz. His email is [email protected].
